Delighted to lose out

We were recently shortlisted for the Social Enterprise of the Year award by Social Enterprise UK and when the winner was announced at the ceremony on 28th November, we were more than happy to lose out.

All of the other finalists would’ve been worthy winners. But the actual winner, Dulas, a renewable energy cooperative, has an inspiring tale to tell.

Dulas, based in Machynlleth in Wales was founded in 1982 to deliver renewable energy solutions to businesses, landowners and charities. It’s mission is to provide the consultation and mechanical innovation that its clients need to go green. From hydro dams in Austria to solar powered vaccine fridges in Zambia, Dulas innovates the technology and delivers it.

Dulas’ story demonstrates that it’s possible for a small social businesses to grow and succeed in a competitive sector, and on a global scale.  And it’s achievements are inspiring other energy providers to follow suit – a true mark of success.

We’ve achieved a lot in our 11 years in business – helping 157 people out of homelessness through training and employment. But when it starts becoming common for others operating in the events industry to create social impact by thinking a bit differently about who they invest in too, then we really will have been successful.

The events industry has been addressing it’s environmental impact for some time and has come a long way. Human impact is the next challenge for the events industry to take on and we are starting to see the tide turning. It’s encouraging to see our clients proudly showcasing the social impact they are creating by working with us and using the fact to impress corporate sponsors, even customers and consumers.

So, when our snazzy finalist’s certificate landed yesterday we couldn’t wait to get it on display. It’s a reminder of what we’ve achieved over the last 11 years and the possibilities for the next 11 too.
